Calling Israelis to Leave Sri Lanka
The National Security Council has called on Israeli citizens to immediately leave Arugam Bay and the south and west coastal areas of Sri Lanka due to a "high risk of a terror attack against Israelis."
The warning comes after the Sri Lankan government received credible information from "foreign intelligence services."
The National Security Council's announcement was made just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett held talks in Sri Lanka with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa.
According to the NSC, the attack could be carried out by a local militant group or by foreigners. There are no immediate details on suspects or the group that could be behind the potential attack; the NSC did not release any further information about the nature of the threat or the group that could be responsible for the attack.
The NSC did not provide any specific information about the time frame of the possible attack, other than to say it could be imminent.
Arugam Bay is a popular tourist destination on Sri Lanka's east coast. The south and west coasts are also home to popular tourist destinations, including the capital city of Colombo and the ancient city of Galle.
Sri Lanka has been on high alert since the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, which killed more than 250 people. The attacks were carried out by a local militant group, the National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ).
