Colin Farrell Needed His Own Igloo to Keep His ‘Penguin’ Makeup from Melting

The cold, hard truth behind the scenes

Colin Farrell went to great lengths for his role as the Penguin in"The Batman". Not only is he unrecognizable beneath layers of prosthetics, but he also had to contend with them melting in the heat.

Farrell revealed that he had a personal igloo on set to keep his elaborate makeup from melting under the hot studio lighting.

“I found out very quickly that the makeup would melt under the heat of the lights. So they would touch it up and I would go and sit in an igloo to try and keep it preserved," Farrell said.

More than just a gimmick

The Penguin's makeup was not just made up of latex pieces.

The makeup department used prosthetics, makeup, and CGI to create Farrell's look. Farrell would spend hours in the makeup chair every day, and the process was quite uncomfortable.

“It was like putting your face in a microwave for hours at a time,” Farrell said. “But it was worth it because the end result was so good.”

Worth the trouble

Farrell's performance as the Penguin was one of the most acclaimed aspects of "The Batman". The character is a complex and tragic figure, and Farrell brought him to life in a way that was both believable and heartbreaking.

The fact that Farrell was willing to go to such lengths to play the role is a testament to his dedication to his craft. It also shows how much he cared about bringing the Penguin to life in a way that would be authentic and believable.
