Jurgen Klopp couldn't keep the smile from his face. The Liverpool manager had just watched his team win its ninth EFL Cup, with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
Van Dijk's Header Makes History
Virgil van Dijk was the hero for Liverpool, scoring the winning goal in extra time. The Dutch defender rose highest to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner and power a header into the back of the Arsenal goal.
The win gives Liverpool a record-extending ninth EFL Cup title. It is also the club's first trophy this season, after they came close to winning the Premier League and the Champions League last season.
Klopp was delighted with his team's performance. "It was a great performance," he said. "The boys showed great character and determination."
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was disappointed with the result, but he praised his team's effort.
"We played well," he said. "But we couldn't find the goal. We had chances, but we didn't take them."
